It’s the flight delay of your nightmares.

An Air France plane traveling from Paris to Shanghai was diverted to the Siberian city of Irkutsk on Sunday – and then stayed there for three days, according to the New York Times.

The plane was stopped “after an acrid smell and light smoke wafted through the cabin.” The Times reports:

“But a chilly reception then awaited — both literally (at one point it was around 1 degree Fahrenheit, or minus 17 Celsius, outside) and figuratively, with passengers forced to stay within the confines of the airport or two hotels where they were put up because they lacked entry visas. Initially, they were denied access to their luggage as well.”

A second Air France plane sent to pick up the 282 stranded passengers also broke down when its hydraulic system froze. A third plane send to save the travelers finally made the flight from Irkutsk to Shanghai on Wednesday.
