China’s smart-speaker market leader Baidu overtook Google as the second-largest player by shipments in the second quarter of 2019, market analysis firm Canalys said in a report published Monday.
According to the report, Baidu shipped 4.5 million units during the period, while Google shipped 4.3 million. Amazon remained the top player, shipping 6.6 million smart-speakers across the globe.
Baidu’s impressive performance is part of China’s robust growth in the sector. During the three months, Chinese palyers’ total smart-speakers shipped were twice more than that of the U.S.’ —12.6 million units versus 6.1 million units, Canalys said. In May, Canalys reported that China passed the U.S. for the first time as the world’s largest smart-speaker market, with Baidu as the country’s market leader.
Canalys analyst Cynthia Chen attributed Baidu’s strong performance to “aggressive marketing” and “go-to-market campaigns.” Canalys believed the company is now dominating the operator channel — an advantage which could allow Baidu to sustain growth as the China market expands.
China's Alibaba and Xiaomi ranked fourth and fifth on Canalys’ list with 4.1 million and 2.8 million smart-speakers shipped respectively during the period.
