President Xi Urges ‘Unremitting Efforts’ to Guard Against Resurgence of Outbreak
What's New: At a meeting of top leaders, President Xi Jinping urged “unremitting efforts” in guarding against imported cases of Covid-19 from abroad and preventing a resurgence of the outbreak at home, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Xi made his comments as he chaired a Politburo Standing Committee meeting Wednesday to make new arrangements on epidemic prevention and control measures and advance the resumption of work, Xinhua said.
Background: As the new coronavirus has been mostly contained in China, the country is facing challenges to balance long-term virus prevention and returning the economy to its previous growth track.
Scientists have warned of a second wave of Covid-19 sometime next winter or spring, so the Politburo meeting signaled China's top leadership is aware of the longer term challenges posed by the virus.
China is also trying to revive economic activity that had been largely put on hold since the Lunar New Year, even as much of the rest of the world is now experiencing a similar near halt. China hopes to build a “moderately prosperous society” in 2020, a phased development goal that includes boosting GDP by four times from the level in 2000.
