Tesla is no longer a niche electric vehicle (EV) brand in China, as sales of its domestically-built Model 3 have continued to grow in the world’s largest auto market.

In August, Tesla’s Shanghai-assembled Model 3 sedan maintained its position as China’s most-sold EV model, with 11,811 cars sold in the country, according to statistics provided by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).

The August sales figure marks a 7.2% increase from July when 11,014 Shanghai-made Model 3 sedans were sold in China, and brings Tesla’s total sales of the car during this year’s first eight months to 68,579 units.

Tesla signed an agreement to build its Shanghai plant in the summer of 2018, and started delivering the China-made Model 3 sedans in January 2020.

Last month, total sales of new energy passenger vehicles in China grew 46.3% year-on-year to 93,000 units, according to the CPCA.

In August, the Hongguang Mini, a two-door micro EV launched by General Motors’ Chinese joint venture, claimed the title of the second most popular electric car model in the country, with sales of 9,150 units, the CPCA statistics showed.
