Three Weeks After Arriving Back in China, Shenyang Resident Tests Positive for Covid-19

What’s new: A Chinese traveler has been confirmed with Covid-19 more than three weeks after her return from South Korea, the local government announced in a statement Wednesday, as the rate of imported cases continues to rise in the country.

The Chinese passenger, surnamed Yin, returned to Shenyang, Northeast China’s Liaoning province, on Nov. 29 and tested negative for the coronavirus upon arrival.

Throughout her subsequent 14-day mandatory quarantine until Dec. 13, the 67-year-old passenger’s Covid-19 infection status remained negative, enabling her to return home.

On Dec. 22, she went to a fever clinic and tested positive for the virus the following day.

What's more: On receiving reports of Yin’s positive result, the municipal government of Shenyang prepared to enter “wartime” mode, putting in place measures to stem any potential spread of the virus. As of Wednesday, local health authorities had traced 71 close contacts of Yin.

Chinese diplomatic missions have continued tightening pre-travel testing requirements in an effort to cut off transmission of imported cases as the virus surges abroad. China’s embassy in the U.K. has disqualified test results provided by the host country's National Health Service as well as certain private clinics due to alleged faulty testing.
