Hu Xijin (胡锡进), editor-in-chief of China’s nationalist tabloid Global Times, confirmed in a Weibo post Thursday that he has stepped down as editor to serve, in his retirement, as a guest commentator for the newspaper.

Hu’s retirement has drawn significant public attention. As of Thursday, the hashtag “Hu Xijin retires” had received around 3 million views on Weibo. Another hashtag #Hu Xijin# has been viewed more than 130 million times on Weibo and generated wide discussion online.
