China reported Sunday its first pair of local Covid-19 cases infected with the omicron variant in the eastern port city of Tianjin, increasing the challenge for the country to contain the more contagious form of the virus that has been driving up daily caseloads around the world since its discovery in November.

Tianjin municipal disease control authorities have confirmed the genetic sequencing of the coronavirus that infected the two local patients was identical to the most common omicron BA.1 lineage.
