In more than two years of anti-pandemic efforts, China has done everything to keep the Covid-19 virus out of its territory, maintaining very low infection and mortality rates. However, since the 2022 Spring Festival Hong Kong has been hit by a fifth wave of outbreaks only a month after discovering the first case, and the situation went completely out of control. Most of the outbreaks in mainland China and Hong Kong are due to the highly transmissible omicron variant known as BA.2.
