Shanghai has reported a new daily record of Covid-19 infections as a shortage of medical services and beds prompted some to suggest self-isolating at home if they are asymptomatic and after authorities extended a lockdown to cover all of China’s largest city.

The nation’s financial capital on Friday recorded 6,311 new Covid-19 cases, including those with symptoms and those without, after numbers had fallen for the previous two days, official data showed. The outbreak is now the worst the city has seen in the two years since the pandemic began.
