The state of urbanization in China is evolving, reflecting deep changes in Chinese society over the last four decades. China entered its economic reform period at the tail end of the 70s with a per capita GDP of only $200, making the Asian nation one of the poorest countries in the world. In 2021, China’s per capita GDP has reached $12,500, closer to the World Bank standard for high-income countries of $16,300.
