Weekend Long Read: China’s Trade Growth Recovers From Covid Shock

China’s export growth accelerated significantly to 16.9% year-on-year in May from that of 3.9% in April, against the consensus estimate of 8%. Import growth managed to recover to 4.1% year-on-year in May against the consensus for 2.8% growth, while it was almost flat versus the April figure a year ago. The monthly trade balance widened to $78.8 billion from $51.1 billion in April, compared with the consensus estimate of $57.7 billion.
