Island Resort City Sanya Locked Down Amid Covid Outbreak, Stranding More Than 80,000 Tourists

China's beach resort city of Sanya in the southernmost Hainan province has been placed under lockdown amid the latest Covid outbreak in the city, stranding more than 80,000 tourists at local hotels during what is the island’s peak season.
Since Aug. 1, the tourism destination has reported 646 positive cases of the more contagious omicron subvariant BA.5 of Covid as of Saturday, including 525 people with symptoms and 121 asymptomatic cases, according to local health authorities.
