A 32-year-old woman in Guangzhou who recently tested positive for Covid-19 hanged herself to death shortly after being sent to a makeshift hospital under China’s strict virus control policies.

The woman, known as Xiaoya, was found dead Nov. 18 in a restroom of the Nansha Gymnasium in southern Guangzhou. Police said homicide was ruled out.

Xiaoya arrived at the stadium Nov. 16 among the first group of Covid patients who arrived after the facility was transformed into a makeshift hospital to receive mild and asymptomatic patients amid the city’s recent flare-up.
