Chartered Flights Show China’s Coastal Labor Shortage Is Getting Serious

Guangdong and Fujian provinces have chartered flights to bring back migrant workers who are still at home for the Lunar New Year holiday, joining a number of wealthier coastal regions that are going the extra mile to attract workers with the end of “zero-Covid.”

The flights, along with other measures to get workers back on the job, illustrates the seriousness of the current labor shortages in China’s coastal manufacturing centers, just as their Covid-hit factories are ramping up post-holiday production.
