China’s three state-owned telco giants have been stepping up their cloud computing expansion, in efforts that could shake up the market currently dominated by privately owned tech firms.

In 2022, China Telecom Corp. Ltd., China United Network Communications Ltd. (China Unicom) and China Mobile Ltd. managed triple-digit growth in their cloud computing business. Revenue from China Telecom Cloud grew 107.5% to 57.9 billion yuan ($8.4 billion), while that of Unicom Cloud and China Mobile increased by 121% to 36.1 billion yuan and 108.1% to 50.3 billion yuan respectively.
