Editorial: The Challenges of Building a National Unified Market

The effort to build pace unified national market is expected to pick up pace. At a recent executive meeting, the State Council deliberated on the overall work plan and latest measures to unify China’s domestic market, with an emphasis on “addressing regional protectionism and market fragmentation, maintaining long-term focus and persistence.” Alongside that, it urged further efforts in deepening reforms to optimize fundamental principles of the market economy system, such as property rights protection, market access, fair competition and social credit. As China’s economy gradually recovers from three years of the pandemic, the significance of accelerating the construction of a unified domestic market is self-evident. If effectively advanced, China’s market economy will mature further, providing solid support for high-quality development.
