A Xinjiang police official suspected of releasing one or more detainees without authorization is facing impending prosecution after an investigation, the region’s prosecuting organ said Monday.

Li Fang, a former deputy director of the public security bureau of Shuimogou district in Urumqi, could be imprisoned or undergo criminal detention if convicted. China’s Criminal Law stipulates that judicial officers who commit crimes of a similar nature may receive a sentence of more than 10 years if the circumstances are “particularly serious.”
