Former Premier Li Keqiang died suddenly on Friday after suffering a heart attack, state media reported. He was 68.
Li suffered a heart attack while resting in Shanghai on Thursday and died just after midnight after “all-out efforts to revive him failed,” state broadcaster CCTV reported.
Li was China’s No. 2 leader and head of the State Council, the country’s cabinet, for a decade under President Xi Jinping. He was also a member of the Politburo Standing Committee — the Communist Party’s top decision-making body — for three consecutive terms from 2007 to October 2022. He retired in March and was replaced by Li Qiang, former Shanghai party chief, at the annual “Two Sessions” political gathering.
