Jeffrey Bader, Navigator and Defender of U.S.-China Engagement, Dies at 78

Jeffrey A. Bader, a prominent American diplomat involved in China-related policies across various periods, died at the age of 78 on Oct. 22. He served as the Senior Director for East Asian Affairs at the White House’s National Security Council during the Obama administration. The Brookings Institution announced his passing on its website.
Bader was the U.S. Ambassador to Namibia in the 1990s and later worked as the Assistant U.S. Trade Representative handling Chinese affairs in the early 2000s.
