Former China Railway Czar Sheng Guangzu Sentenced to 15 Years in Prison

What’s new: Sheng Guangzu, a former top official overseeing China’s vast railway system, was sentenced to 15 years in prison and fined 6 million yuan ($836,000) for taking more than 63 million yuan in bribes.
Sheng, 74, was sentenced Tuesday after a four-month trial in Baoji, northwestern China’s Shaanxi province.
Prosecutors accused Sheng of taking 56.7 million yuan in bribes between 2004 and 2022, using his power in the railway system to seek business and promotion benefits for others. Separately, he was charged with taking more than 7 million yuan in bribes through others in 2021, according to prosecutors.
