Lai Ching-te’s Election Victory Does Not Change the Basic Fact Taiwan is Part of China, Says Foreign Minister

Wang Yi, China’s foreign minister said the result of Taiwan’s latest leadership election, which saw the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate win this weekend, will not change the “basic fact” that Taiwan is part of China, and pursuit of Taiwan’s independence is a “dead-end road.”

“China will eventually achieve complete reunification and Taiwan will return to the embrace of the motherland,” Wang said during a press conference Sunday in Cario after meeting his Egyptian counterpart as part of a nine-day trip to Africa, a statement from the foreign ministry said.
