“Short hair is a signal,” said Liu Chang, chairwoman of New Hope Liuhe Co. Ltd., as she discusses the pressures of the business downturn she has faced in recent years.

Dressed in a red and black Ralph Lauren checkered knit dress, 43-year-old Liu speaks quickly yet cautiously in an exclusive interview with Caixin at the feed giant’s headquarters in downtown Beijing. The big wavy hairstyle she had a few years ago is gone. Now she sports a shorter, neater look.
