China will “consolidate and enhance” its leading position in the intelligent connected new-energy vehicle (NEV) industry amid the rising popularity and exports of Chinese-made NEVs, Premier Li Qiang said in his maiden government work report.

In the report delivered Tuesday to the National People’s Congress, the country’s top legislature, Li spoke highly of China’s progress, saying it “accounted for over 60% of global electric vehicle output and sales” in 2023. He also highlighted “a 30% increase in exports of the ‘new trio,’ namely, electric vehicles, lithium-ion batteries, and photovoltaic products.”
