A paper published in Science estimates that 22% to 26% of China’s coastal lands will drop below sea level by 2120.

China is subsiding and one in 10 homes in coastal cities could be below sea level within a century, a paper published in Science Magazine warned last week.

Of the 82 major cities studied, home to 74% of China’s urban population, 16% were sinking rapidly — faster than 10 millimeters a year. These included the capital Beijing and its neighbor Tianjin, the paper said.
