The Chongqing municipal government has found itself caught in a whirlwind of public opinion. This arose after the local natural gas companies installed smart gas meters for customers in the region from the end of 2023 to early 2024.

Since April, there has been a surge of complaints from residents about an increase in their gas bills, leading to suspicions of overcharging by the gas companies. Chongqing has over 5.8 million natural gas users, the majority being residential.
