What’s new: Li Guohua, who headed one of China’s biggest telecom carriers and a major state-owned bank, was sentenced on Tuesday to 16 years in prison and fined 6 million yuan ($830,000) for taking more than 66 million yuan in bribes and abusing his power. The court also ordered him to return 45 million yuan of the money he received in bribes.

The 63-year-old was placed under investigation in February 2022, nearly two years after he retired as general manager of China United Network Communications Group Co. Ltd. (China Unicom), one of the country’s three biggest state telecom carriers.
