Chinese Foreign Ministry Promotes Long-Time Spokesperson to Vice Minister

Hua Chunying, China’s assistant foreign minister and long-time ministry spokesperson, has been named vice foreign minister, according to an announcement Monday.
Hua, 54, has spent most of her more-than three decades in government at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA). She is the youngest of the five current vice foreign ministers and the only woman.
Starting in late 2012, Hua served as a spokesperson for more than 11 years — the longest term in the ministry’s history. She remains listed as one of four spokespersons on the MFA’s website Monday.
