Without typing a single line of code, simply tell artificial intelligence (AI) what you want, and it can swiftly generate an application. A wave of self-revolution is sweeping through global internet companies, as nearly 28 million programmers face the challenge of their professions being upended while they create, optimize, or utilize AI assistants.
On September 6, California-based startup Replit unveiled a platform called Replit Agent, which claims to transform ideas into fully functional applications without any coding experience. Replit CEO Amjad Masad demonstrated how users can simply input their requirements into a browser dialogue box, and AI will automatically write the code, create the app, and adjust its features based on improvement instructions—all without inputting a line of code. Replit Agent operates entirely in the browser, sans downloads, allowing users to develop apps even from their mobile phones.
Coincidentally, Anysphere, a startup backed by OpenAI, recently launched its AI code generation app, Cursor, which has gained significant attention on social media. Many users have demonstrated that Cursor can create web pages based on language instructions. Cursor is equipped with what are currently considered the most powerful large language models (LLM), such as OpenAI's GPT-4o and Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet, all of which come with built-in code generation capabilities.

- AI tools like Replit Agent and Cursor are transforming app development by enabling code generation from natural language without writing code manually. These advancements pose challenges and opportunities for the 28 million programmers globally.
- Major companies like OpenAI, Alibaba, and Baidu are actively integrating AI into their processes, focusing on enhancing efficiency and expanding AI tools for larger market applications.
- AI's impact on the labor market includes altering job roles and potentially replacing some tasks, with increased focus on training for a more digitally adept workforce.
Without writing any code, AI can now generate applications based on user instructions, showcasing the rapid evolution in tech tools. Self-revolution is evident across global internet companies as nearly 28 million programmers face the reshaping of their careers due to AI advancements. [para. 1] Replit introduced a platform on September 6 that allows users to input requirements into a browser and watch as AI generates codes and applications. Similarly, Anysphere has launched Cursor, a popular AI code generation app that creates web pages from text instructions, using powerful LLMs like GPT-4o and Claude 3.5 Sonnet. [para. 2]
The impact of AI on the labor market, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, may not be as rapid as some anticipate, as mutual enhancement between humans and AI continues. [para. 3] OpenAI recently secured $6.6 billion in new funding, doubling its market valuation to $157 billion in less than a year. [para. 4] New coding features in applications like ChatGPT enable precise code edits, supporting various languages. [para. 5]
AI has proven highly capable in coding, as demonstrated by initiatives like GitHub's Copilot and other models from Google, Anthropic, and Meta. Despite a lawsuit challenging AI training and outputs, tools like Copilot continue to evolve. [para. 6] AI code assistants are becoming integral to daily programming tasks, enhancing productivity in coding and non-coding activities. [para. 7]
AI's capability to influence software development at all stages, from design to maintenance, adds efficiency to processes previously thought unmanageable without human intervention. Testing, a considerable part of coding, is now being automated, increasing pressure on programmers. [para. 8]
AI integration reflects a significant urgency across businesses. As noted in an IBM survey, CEOs are actively adopting generative AI, with predictions of significant workforce skill changes over the next three years. A majority believe that advanced AI will be the key competitive differentiator. [para. 9] Employees, however, perceive AI as a replacement threat, evident from decreased exposure to jobs and increased anxiety, especially among roles susceptible to AI automation like accountants, programmers, and editors. [para. 10]
AI is fostering intelligent adaptations in businesses, contributing to enhanced productivity and evolving roles for programmers. As AI capabilities expand, businesses anticipate restructuring to leverage these advancements, though some segments of the workforce feel the pressure of obsolescence. [para. 11] In the broader market, AI developments have aligned with endeavors by companies like Alibaba, Baidu, Tencent, and ByteDance, showing localized deployments and substantial code generation automation. [para. 12]
Companies like Alibaba Cloud and ByteDance are tailoring AI solutions for varied industry applications. These companies focus on integrating AI coding tools throughout development cycles for competitive advantage, with marked efficiency boosts noted in project timelines. [para. 13] AI tools' reach extends beyond internal benefits to attract external enterprise users, aiming to bolster market positions through more expansive AI capability sharing. [para. 14]
The technical capability race implies potential significant societal shifts, with AI possibly displacing certain job sectors. A balanced view of AI indicates shifts towards human-machine collaboration rather than outright replacement, though full automation is still distant. [para. 15] Companies must strategically develop their AI resources to maximize productivity while ensuring that humans remain vital collaborators in leveraging AI's potential. [para. 16] Even as developments highlight productivity and efficiency, the future of programming involves increased reliance on AI tools, demanding adaptability in skillsets. [para. 17][para. 18]
