Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd.’s 80-year-old founder emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) during a talk with a group of contestants at a programming competition, reflecting the Chinese company’s strong interest in the technology, which is playing a part in expanding its revenue base as U.S. sanctions continue to bite.

During a recent symposium with college students who took part in this year’s ICPC Challenge Championship, which was jointly organized by International Collegiate Programming Contest and Huawei in mid-October, Ren Zhengfei described the global embrace of AI as “inexorable” as the development of technologies such as chips and computing architecture is “accelerating the arrival of an intelligent era,” according to a readout published Thursday on the website of ICPC’s Beijing headquarters.
