A rundown of the news making headlines in and around China:

Export controls: China has restricted exports of five metals used in the semiconductor and defense industries to protect its national security. The Ministry of Commerce and the General Administration of Customs announced Tuesday that tungsten, tellurium, bismuth, molybdenum and indium had been added to its dual-use export control list. To ship certain items related to these metals abroad, exporters have to apply for special licenses from the ministry. There’s a connection to China’s tech war with the U.S. here. In December 2023, China announced a general restriction for exporting dual-use items related to gallium, germanium, antimony and other materials to the U.S. China accounts for over 80% of global production of tungsten and bismuth.
