Lawrence Summers, a former U.S. treasury secretary, criticized the Trump administration’s tariffs as an “quite unwise” policy, suggesting that technological advancements like artificial intelligence could significantly boost economic growth and help counteract fiscal pressures facing the U.S.

Summers, now president emeritus of Harvard University, made the remarks Thursday in an online dialogue with Hu Shuli, the publisher of Caixin Media, during the Asia New Vision Forum 2025.
