(Nikkei Asia) — Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. will produce semiconductors for artificial intelligence (AI) at its new plant in Kumamoto, Japan, the company announced Thursday, in a change from its original plan of only producing less powerful chips at the facility.

The world’s largest chipmaker will manufacture advanced 3-nanometer chips at the facility. This shift would help Japan to secure a stable domestic supply of semiconductors for AI amid increasing global competition for the powerful chips.
