Listen to the full version

China’s domestic travel and tourism spending climbed to record levels during the 2026 Spring Festival holiday, as an extended nine-day break fueled a surge in cross-regional mobility.
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism said Tuesday that domestic trips totaled 596 million, up 95 million from the eight-day holiday in 2025.
While the headline figure points to strong travel demand, the underlying data reflect more cautious consumer behavior. Total domestic tourism spending reached 803.5 billion yuan ($116.3 billion), an increase of 126.5 billion yuan from a year earlier. Average spending per trip, however, fell to about 150 yuan from roughly 169 yuan during the 2025 holiday, indicating that although more people are traveling, individual outlays have tightened.
