U.S. President Donald Trump plans to visit Beijing in mid-May after postponing an earlier trip because of ongoing U.S. military action against Iran, setting the stage for the first visit to China by a sitting American president in nearly a decade.
Asked about Trump’s updated timeline during a regular press briefing on Thursday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said head-of-state diplomacy plays an irreplaceable role in providing strategic guidance for bilateral relations. Lin added that Washington and Beijing are maintaining communication regarding the visit.
