China’s Auto Exports Surge as Sales at Home Slump
Listen to the full version
Surging exports of Chinese passenger vehicles in the first quarter of 2026 provided a crucial bright spot to the country’s automakers as domestic sales slumped amid waning subsidies and rising costs.
The widening divergence underscores the growing reliance of Chinese car manufacturers on overseas markets to sustain growth, accelerating their push to localize production globally as domestic demand cools.
Domestic retail sales of passenger cars dropped 17.4% year-on-year to about 4.2 million units in the first quarter, while exports soared 61.4% to about 1.8 million units, according to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA).
