Artificial intelligence (AI) cannot fix the fundamental bottlenecks in China’s animation industry and is unlikely to fully replace filmmaking, according to the chairman of the main producer behind the country’s highest-grossing movie. 

Speaking Friday at a forum during the 28th Shanghai International Film Festival, Wang Changtian of Beijing Enlight Media Co. Ltd. (300251.SZ) said AI falls short of addressing the industry’s two main pain points: a severe shortage of capable animation directors and a lack of quality scripts.
