A former senior security official in central China’s Henan province was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday for taking more than 316 million yuan ($46.56 million) in bribes, setting a record for illicit financial gains amassed by a Chinese official after retirement.

Liu Mancang, who previously served as the head of the Political and Legal Affairs Commission in Henan province, was convicted of bribery and using his former influence to extract illicit payouts. The Suzhou Intermediate People’s Court handed down the life sentence, stripping Liu of his political rights for life and confiscating all his personal property.
