China’s retail sales reversed a contraction to grow 1% year-on-year in June, official data showed Wednesday, beating market expectations and signaling stronger consumer momentum.

The unexpected uptick followed a 0.6% drop in May — the lowest reading in more than three years. Economists in a recent Caixin survey had on average projected zero growth.

The rebound was largely driven by a major mid-year e-commerce shopping festival and a lower base of comparison tied to the Dragon Boat Festival holiday.
