Commentary: Uneven Growth Highlights Policy Challenges as Chinese Economy Pivots

China’s economic performance in the first half of the year has drawn mixed reactions. Gross domestic product grew 4.7% year over year, remaining at a reasonable pace despite mounting pressures. However, after a strong 5.0% expansion in the first quarter, growth cooled to 4.3% in the second.

To understand where the world’s second-largest economy is heading, one must look beyond the headline deceleration. Beneath the surface, China is undergoing a profound and uneven structural transformation.
