Cai Fuchao, a former top Chinese publicity official and media regulator who rose from a packaging factory floor to oversee the country’s press and broadcasting sectors, has been placed under investigation eight years after his retirement.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, China’s top anti-graft watchdog, announced on July 15 that the 75-year-old is suspected of serious violations of party discipline and law — a standard euphemism for corruption. He is currently undergoing disciplinary review and supervisory investigation.
