Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) plans to deploy 5 gigawatt-hours of sodium-ion energy-storage systems in Western Europe starting in 2027 under a new agreement with Dutch energy integrator Alfen N.V.

The partnership marks the first European rollout of the Chinese battery giant’s sodium-ion technology, an alternative to conventional lithium-ion systems that is designed to improve safety, perform better in cold weather and help developers reduce exposure to volatile lithium prices.
