China is launching a one-year campaign against organized crime, expanding its focus to target online syndicates, “soft violence” and corrupt officials who shield criminal networks.

Chen Wenqing, a member of the Communist Party’s Politburo and head of the Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission, announced the initiative at a recent national video conference. He directed authorities to eliminate “tumors eroding the social body” and build a safer, more stable country, according to the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
