At the recent 2026 International Congress of Mathematicians, Deng Yu and Wang Hong each took home a Fields Medal. This marks the first time Chinese nationals have received the prestigious award, with Wang also becoming only the third female laureate in the prize’s history.

Often dubbed the “Nobel Prize of mathematics,” the Fields Medal is the highest honor in the international mathematical community. The academic achievements of these two scholars are a testament not only to their individual brilliance, passion, focus and hard work, but also to the remarkable strides made by Chinese higher education and scientific research. Furthermore, their success is a hard-won fruit of robust international exchange and collaboration.
