China plans to overhaul its power system over the next five years to absorb a far larger share of renewable energy, expand direct green-power supplies and push more electricity trading into the market, as rapid growth in wind and solar strains the country’s grids.

By 2030, nonfossil fuels should generate 50% of China’s electricity, up from 42.3% at the end of the previous five-year planning period, according to a plan released Monday by the National Development and Reform Commission and the National Energy Administration.
