Battery-powered electric vehicle sales in Australia more than tripled from a year earlier in July, driven in part by volatile gasoline prices and lifting Chinese automakers into the upper ranks of the market.

The acceleration in Australia’s car market, which relies entirely on imports, points to a broader shift in consumer preferences that is helping Chinese electric vehicle makers challenge established players such as Toyota Motor Corp.
