Former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, a fierce reformer who engineered China’s pivot to a market economy and its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), died Wednesday in Beijing. He was 98.
Zhu died of an illness following unsuccessful medical treatment, according to an official obituary published by the state-run Xinhua News Agency.
Serving as premier from 1998 to 2003, he steered the country through the Asian financial crisis by refusing to devalue the yuan and implementing proactive fiscal policies to expand domestic demand.
