(Johannesburg, South Africa) — For years, funding for global health aid has flowed into this complicated, vibrant metropolis to address public health crises including HIV and AIDS and tuberculosis (TB).

Now, South Africa faces a major shortfall in aid funding. In 2025, the U.S. announced its withdrawal from the World Health Organization (WHO), while the U.S. Agency for International Development suspended foreign aid. Several European countries followed.
