Moonshot AI founder Yang Zhilin has emerged as one of the most closely watched figures in China’s new generation of artificial-intelligence entrepreneurs, combining an elite academic pedigree with an unconventional path that has taken him to one of the country’s most valuable AI startups.

The attention intensified after Moonshot AI released Kimi K3 in July, an open-weight model with 2.8 trillion parameters that set a record for model size at the time. The company has also been raising capital at a rapid pace and preparing for a Hong Kong listing.
