A rare phenomenon is unfolding in global currency markets in 2026: the U.S. dollar and the Chinese yuan are climbing in tandem. By late September, the U.S. dollar index had risen 3% for the year, while the yuan appreciated 4.1% against the greenback. Since China’s 2015 foreign exchange reform, this dynamic has only occurred once before, in 2021.
