Description of presentation: Climate change constitutes the greatest public health challenge of the 21 st century. Consequently, climate change mitigation (i.e., urgent and steep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions) is absolutely essential to protect our health and that of future generations. However, the health benefits of lowering greenhouse gas emissions today will not start accruing for several decades.

Fortunately, climate change mitigation measures have major immediate health benefits apart from the delayed benefits resulting from lower greenhouse gas emissions. This presentation will review the adverse health effects of climate change as well as the immediate health “co-benefits” of climate change mitigation.

Dr. Dubrow has been heavily involved in the educational mission of Yale School of Public Health, as well as in research. In 2015, moved by what he sees as the greatest public health challenge in this century, Dr. Dubrow committed himself to a new direction in the field of climate change and health, and became founding Faculty Director for an initiative that grew into the Yale Center on Climate Change and Health, for which he continues to serve as Faculty Director. Dr. Dubrow's discipline is epidemiology. His research focuses on adverse health effects of heat and air pollution, with a particular focus on effects of these factors on kidney disease risk. He also has interests in the benefits and harms of air conditioning, in climate change and health in the Caribbean, and in health equity issues as they relate to climate change. His previous research focused on cancer, HIV, and their intersection.

Professor Douglas Kysar is Joseph M. Field ’55 Professor of Law at Yale Law School and faculty co-director of the Law, Ethics and Animals Program. His teaching and research areas include torts, animal law, environmental law, climate change, products liability, and risk regulation. Kysar was previously on the faculty at Cornell Law School. He received his B.A. summa cum laude from Indiana University in 1995 and his J.D. magna cum laude from Harvard Law School in 1998. Following law school, he clerked for the Honorable William G. Young of the United States District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

Jianyu Zhang is Executive President of the BRI Green Development Institute. He has been involved in establishing China’s Carbon Trading System since 2013. He helped found the China program of Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), a leading US environmental NGO, since 1999. Dr. Zhang serves on many advisory boards, including Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences (CRAES) and is a special advisor for China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED).

He has authored many peer-reviewed articles, columns and book chapters, and is a frequent commentator on environmental issues in the media in China.

Professor Prober focuses on experimental solid state physics and superconductivity; coherent quantum transport and noise studies; superconducting quantum detectors: microwave UV and x-ray detectors; nanostructure fabrication techniques. Professor Prober was named winner of the Yale Science and Engineering 2019 Award for the Advancement of Basic and Applied Science.

While artificial intelligence hasn't played a big role so far tackling the climate crisis, this talk argues that it could and should. Bringing together exciting new projects from NASA, Microsoft, Google, Indigenous communities, nonprofits, as well as young researchers, this talk tries to translate complex science into ordinary language. It showcases what AI can do to make climate data tangible and meaningful to the public, and help streamline flood response and protect biodiversity.

Professor Wai Chee Dimock is a longtime Yale English professor who taught the popular Yale Open Course “Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Faulkner”. She now spends her time writing about climate change.

Dr. Yuan Yao is an Assistant Professor of Industrial Ecology and Sustainable Systems at the Yale School of the Environment. Her research is motivated by the increasing need for sustainable solutions that can support industrial development without compromising the environment or depleting the resources for future generations. Dr. Yao has been leading collaborative projects with U.S. national labs, private companies, and non-profits.

Climate change can be looked at through many different lenses: by way of actual mitigation and adaptation projects, or by way of the literary imagination. This talk brings together two genres of writing: science journalism and literary criticism. We'll discuss a collaboration between NASA and the Navajo Nation, resulting in a Drought Severity Evaluation Tool, as well as three novels exploring environmental justice, attending to the craft of writing as well as the ethical questions posed by climate catastrophes.

Professor Oristaglio is the co-founder and inaugural director of the Energy Studies Multidisciplinary Academic Program at Yale and a research scientist and lecturer in the fields of energy geoscience and geophysical remote sensing. He also works as a manager for the Society of Exploration Geophysicists on projects designed to advance the science of applied seismology for public benefit. Before coming to Yale in 2009, He spent 25+ years as a scientist and research manager in the geophysical services industry with Schlumberger.

Professor Fred Strebeigh’s nonfiction writing has covered a wide range of subjects including the history and origins of nature writing, the arts and crafts movement in America, the role of the bicycle as a cultural force in China, educational exchange between China and the United States, the creation of a dictionary of American dialects, pressures on the Antarctic treaty system, natural and social conditions in the Falkland Islands, the race to create radar during World War II, traces of early man in southern Africa, the rise of feminist law, saving whales from fishing nets off the coast of Newfoundland, the impact of environmental issues on the presidential election in 2004, and defending the world’s largest system of scientific nature reserves in Russia.

Lihong Shi was a reporter for China Daily and the Liaison Director of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) China Program. In addition to "Wild China" studio, she also founded the non-governmental environmental protection organization "Green Plateau". In 2002, she was awarded “Global Future Leader” by the World Economic Forum. The documentary film"Mystery of the Yunnan Snub-nosed Monkey" won the TVE award at England's Wildscreen Festival in 2002. Her co-production documentary "Waking the Green Tiger" won the 2012 Grant Heim Award for Environmental Reporting and other awards.

Zhinong Xi has worked in Kunming Education TV, CCTV "Animal World", "Oriental Horizon" and other media. In the early 2000s, Zhinong and his wife founded "Wild China" studio with a mission to “use the power of images to protect nature.” In 2016, Xi established the Changshan Nature Center in Dali, a center in Yunnan devoted to educating visitors about the biodiversity and the natural world around them.

Zhinong produced two documentary films about this highly endangered species, including emmy-nominated The Mystery Monkeys of Shangri-La.

He has also received numerous other awards, including the 2022 Wayfinder award of the National Geographic Society, the Gerald Durrell Endangered Species Photographer of the Year award, the BBC’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year award, and named one of the 40 most influential conservation photographers in the world by Outdoor Photography Magazine.
